Imposter Syndrome
Do you struggle with imposter syndrome?
I can tell you that imposter syndrome is one of the most common issues my clients deal with, but you can easily & effortlessly overcome it.
Imposter syndrome is defined as the persistent inability to believe that one’s success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one’s own efforts or skills. Therefore, one feels like a fraud or fears others will figure out they don’t deserve it.
Imposter syndrome is more than feeling self-doubt, it is feeling like you are a fraud or an imposter. According to researcher Dr. Valerie Young, there are five imposter types:
- The Perfectionist. You set unrealistically high standards for yourself and sometimes other people as well. Anything short of perfection feels like a failure. You tend to be overly critical of your performance and doubt the quality of your work.
- The Expert: You feel like an imposter because you don’t know everything there is to know about a particular subject or topic, or you haven’t mastered every step in a process. You feel you need to know everything, before you start on a task, or before you start to pursue a new opportunity. You continuously seek more education before starting.
- The Natural Genius: Not only do you set unrealistically high expectations, you also judge yourself on how quickly & how easily you complete tasks. If you don’t get something right the first time around, or it takes you longer to master a skill, you feel like an imposter.
- The Soloist. You believe asking for help from others is a sign of incompetence. Since you couldn’t get there on your own, you question your ability and skills. You want to prove your worth by working independently, and you struggle to accept support from others.
